About This Game Walkerman is a Visual Novel about hunting supernatural creatures. Each creature obeys a unique set of rules which must be exploited in order to defeat them, in a fashion similar to the old folk tales about vampires and garlic, or werewolves and silver bullets. Each act of Walkerman centers on a creature and the process of investigating it. Players will study the monster in order to ascertain its weaknesses, gather the necessary items, and then confront it in battle. Combat takes place on an isometric, pseudo-board game in which the player selects actions from a list of options. These battle sequences have multiple solutions, depending on the player's collected items and their knowledge of the monster. Players also steer the protagonist through his personal life in a similar fashion: deciding who to trust, where to borrow money, etc which alters how the story progresses.Prologue: The Thing in the WealdJorgen, a nineteen year-old serf, has just embarked upon a peculiar career: monster hunting. The main character does indeed begin to lose some of the stick up his♥♥♥♥♥ That and the little flashes of brilliance shine much brighter and more consistently. It is definitely worth slogging though his tirades in this if only so you can appreciate how far he comes later.Conflicted. I liked most things about the game, the story, the setting, and the characters -except- for the main character, he is insufferable. Honestly having to view the world through his eyes almost spoils the whole thing. He isn't a complete jackass but having to listen to his teenage angst ridden self righteous tirades about how the world is falling into "degeneracy" and how everyone is a degenerate but him was a bit much. The story could have focused so much more heavily on the interesting elements of what being a walkerman entails and having more encounters with the weird but instead it chooses to linger on its protagonist's reactionary political views. You could cut a solid 80% of the massive political diatribes and have a better game.I might still pick up chapter 2 If there's some kind of growth in the main protagonist or at least significantly less of his whinging because I think that there is a very strong setting and elements outside of the main character are handled well. There were many points were I wished this was a more traditional RPG where I could pick how my character felt about things. As it is I would liken the experience to going on an amazing fantasy monster hunt while being stuck with a teenage edge lord whining the whole way.. I am a big fan of a well written story a a choice centered story where the choices you make have a real effect and this game very much delivered on that for me. It's a shame it hasn't gotten more attention really.+Pros-The music is very enjoyable for the most part, the main theme was a bit jarring at first but it grew on me in a campy way.- The main character seems to have a lot of depth to him and has an actual personality in him, rather than many games like this where the main character is as much of a blank slate as possible.- The supporting cast has thus far seems to have a lot of potential depth to them and while screen time in the first episode was mostly dedicated to introducing them I look forward to seeing how the game builds on them in the future.- The world building is well done and seems interesting. This is helped by the fact that aside from a few points where the prose gets a bit too flowery, the writing is very well done and helps to suck you in.-The actual fight and build up to the fight with the enemy in this feels pretty well done in that it encourages you to make logical choices and follow an investigative through line in order to stand a chance in the final battle. While this first one was pretty straight forward and easy I look forward to seeing what kind of weird rules and tricks can be brought in in the future.-Cons-While the build up to the fights and the actual execution of the creatures weakness' all make sense and flow together well the actual work of doing the fight feels a bit too trial and error. The essential problem with the encounter is that you lack some very important information during the fight that makes it impossible to tell if using an item early was going to screw you over in the long run. Essentially because the game lets you use most of your options at any time it's very easy to use up an option early that the game expected you to save for later. While this isn't horrible in the first fight, if it's not tightened up a bit moving forward I can see it getting frustrating as the fights become more complex. Thankfully this is mitigated somewhat by the fact that you can save at any time, but going through the same scene over and over could get very frustrating very easily.- Neutral- While I enjoyed him, the main character is a bit of a jerk and this doesn't always gel with people reading the story. He's not necesarily a bad person and he's written that way on purpose but don't go into this expecting a golden boy protaganist, this guys has his own set of issues.Overall I hugely recommend this game and am looking forward to seeing the story develop in the future.. tl;dr - Feels a lot like Witcher: The Visual Novel. The world is a bit lighter shade of grey, but still quite morally ambiguous. Like The Witcher series, the primary conflict is really between people rather than with the monsters. It also has a very similar theme in terms of combat - a lot of investigation and legwork beforehand to set up for the actual encounter. The protagonist is pretty realistically part of the world, i.e. somewhat of a newbie ignorant racist that means well and tries to be moral within his society's definition of morality. If you enjoyed the culture clash digressions in The Witcher, you'd probably like it here. Also seems to have the same chick magnet thing going. It's pretty short as of now and somewhat limited in choices, but if it continues as is throughout the series, it could be pretty impressive. Note though that the prose does tend towards the purple side of the spectrum, which I find somewhat annoying.. This is a great visual novel story-wise. The visuals are great, too. The music is nothing to write home about but it fits the theme and environments. That being said, I can't recommend this game because it's being split up into separate acts that you have to pay for individually. Simply put, I can't and won't agree with this practice, not that the game doesn't deserve it but because I personally don't agree with the practice. I bought this game on the pretence that I'd be getting the full game overtime, but that's not the case. This being the store page for the game itself, the base game is technically incomplete with DLCs available for purchase to make it complete. It's not as bad as I'm making it out to be, but 7.79 for essentially 1-2 hours and then 3.29~ per act just isn't worth it for me, and I feel like it's worth pointing out how this game is being split up into several acts that you need to pay for.All of that being said, I like the story, the idea of the monsters, and the characters. I agree with something said on a review on the Act 2 page : I would rather buy a series of novels than buy this visual novel as the writing is great but not in a visual novel format.. It's like playing chess but you need to find all your pieces before you start the game. If you didn't find enough of the pieces your dead.If you don't know how to use the piece your dead.If you forgot the sequence on how to activate the piece, it blows up in your face and you guessed it your dead. Also the main protagonist is a stoic masochist, interesting how I enjoy his interaction with the opposite sex.. Walkerman is a pretty unique game. The closest comparison I can come up with is that it's similar to a Witcher VN. The focus is, rather than on killing monsters, you're supposed to find out how you're supposed to do that, experimenting and inquiring to find the set of rules each creature operates on. It's literally a matter of life or death, and requires you to keep a close eye on the plot and any odd occurences, lest you miss a detail that leads to your horrible, horrible death.Speaking of the story, the setting's great. The game does a very good job of putting you in the shoes of Jorgen, rather than making him a self-insert. He's a rural farm-boy with a set of prejudices and preconceptions that leads to some very interesting internal monologues and reactions to other characters. It's an age of decadence and corruption, and he can't help but see moral failings in everyone he sees; the foreign dancer-girl, who you'd expect your average VN protagonist to lust after, is instead labelled a degenerate. It's lovely.I really enjoyed this game, and I'm looking forward to seeing Act 2.. Interesting story with enough horror and intrigue to keep me clicking but this game only includes Act 1 at the moment which can be completed in a few hours. I'd suggest waiting for all 5 chapters to be released, if it ever does, before purchasing this game though. There are multiple branches that probably make this single chapter worthwhile but you probably won't be able to see the effects of your choices till the next chapters. While I'm anticapting the completion of the game, I fear it might not be finished judging by the gap between releases and how far it's strayed from its Kickstarter release schedule. Creating dialogues in Irony Curtain: Irony Curtain: From Matryoshka with Love is a game full of different characters talking to each other. In fact, some puzzles can be solved only by choosing the right dialogue option. That’s why in today’s episode of Behind the Irony Curtain we’d like to tell you more about the process of creating dialogues in our game. Writing dialogues is just the beginning of the process. There are over 5471 lines of text in Irony Curtain and every one of them needs to be properly inserted into the game, to make sure all characters say exactly what Game Designer wants, in the exact time and place. Here’s how it looks in Irony Curtain: 1. Every game character usually has more than one dialogue line. One of the ways to operate it is to use logical TRUE/FALSE flags. These flags helps us determine the state of knowledge of a specific character or whether an event of which the character speaks has already taken place. 2. Each dialogue is built in the editor as a separate “tree” consisting of successive “nodes” connected with each other by lines defining the order in which the dialogue of the character appears. 3. To be honest, “writing” dialogues is just filling the form fields. It looks more or less like this: Create a new dialogue in the editor and give it a name. Then inform Level Designer about the circumstances in which it should be launched (eg. when Evans checks on the Prisoner); Create the first Node (a red dot on the editor screen) and enter the necessary information (into the form on the right side of the screen): Who is talking The Dialogue text (or several dialogues if they should be drawn) (Optional) The Dialogue text when repeating the talk (Optional) If the dialogue happens not on the location but on zoom – whose head and on which side should it be displayed (Optional) Text display time (it’s useful when testing the game without recorded Voice Overs which determine the text display time in the finished game) Where the text should appear on the screen (e.g. over the character or over the radio speaker) (Optional) Actions to be made before or after the dialogue (e.g. acquiring an item or activating a logic flag “character X already knows about Y") Create another dialogue node and fill it in Connect the first node with the second one Rinse & Repeat ;)4. After creating the entire “tree” for all the dialogues we generate so-called “keys”. Keys consist of the location number, dialogue name, text position in the tree and the first letter specifying the character. 5. Thanks to this we can assign a specific Key to a Node, and not just the text. All texts with Keys can be saved to a shared Excel sheet with different languages. As a result, the different language versions of the game have the appropriate dialogues. That is all in this episode of Behind the Irony Curtain. The past and present of Irony Curtain + Steam contest!: Dear Comrades! We'd like to show you the past and present of our upcoming point and click game Irony Curtain: From Matryoshka with Love! Below you'll have the opportunity to witness how much has changed and how far we have come from the original idea that we presented at Polish festivals a while ago. What you see before you is the prototype of Irony Curtain, which back then was called simply 'Matryoshka'. It was always our dream to make a game based on our own experiences, but also tackling the topic with humor and rowdy resistance. And since we love classic point and clicks, there wasn't much of an option but to make one!The pictures you see is from one of the locations which remained almost the same through the evolution of the game - the 'Leader's Heart' hotel lobby, from the beginning of the game. What's your opinion on these? Which verision do you like most? Let us know in the comments below and don't forget to Add Irony Curtain to your wishlist! We're incoming in 2019!IRONY CURTAIN CONTEST - WIN 3 ARTIFEX MUNDI GAMES. The creative process behind creating the locations in Irony Curtain: This time we’d like to acquaint you with the creative process that goes into creating the scenes in the game. Here, for example, we have one of the first locations in the game – the conference Evan attends in order to present a speech on Matryoshka. If you'd like to support the game, don't forget to add Irony Curtain to wishlist!1. First off, we begin with a very rough concept art - mapping out the placement of active elements of the scene (the interactive parts that will contain moving objects), and on this, we build the gameplay (with placeholder dialogues and text and placeholder screens instead of minigames). This is usually the fastest part of the process. If we don’t like it or something doesn’t play out quite as well, we re-do parts of it until everything fits the way we want it to.PS. Drawing each location out by hand means, that we have concept arts for each and every location in the game! Would you like to see them as bonus material?2. After the sketch is completed we create a mood board, which sets the color schemes for all locations (we wanted it to not only be cohesive throughout the whole game but also reflect the passing of time – morning, afternoon, evening, etc). This is possible thanks to the “macrolocation” system we have – once you go through a set of locations you will not return to them again, so we can give you this sense of passing time. 3. Based on the concept we then proceed to fill in the details – this leads us to a complete lineart. A lineart is (just like the name suggests) a picture that has only the outlines, usually in black. If you haven’t seen one, it resembles a page taken out of a child’s coloring book.4. When we’re happy with the result we create a color palette from the mood board and roughly place them on the lineart. At this stage, we check out if everything works together – if the scene conveys what we wanted to say and if it’s also pleasant for the eye. 5. Then come the flat colors – literally filling in the line art with flat colors. Just one color layer, no shadows, no color blending. You could think of it as colorful paper cutouts placed on the lineart.6. The second-to-last step is creating all the shading, light reflections, and all small details that will make-or-break the picture, bringing it to life and helping us tell a story even before there’s a single word spoken or even before we introduce any of the main characters.7. Then, of course, with games comes the step of creating the animations, different states of interactive elements (etc. closed/open doors), etc. But that’s a different part of this tale. So, did you enjoy this little tour? Would you like to see more from Irony Curtain?
