If you enjoyed Ninja Gaiden on the NES, gear up your semi-coherent expletives for a double-jumpin' journey into the heart of madness! Those who salivate over the re-re-remixed cinematic train wrecks of Hong Kong "ninja expert" Godfrey Ho will find something a little extra to love -- but that's just frosting. You'd have to be insane not to like this game!. My sphincter clenched so much.If you like your sphincter to be very clenched, then boy oh boy is this game for you.After roughly 23K unbearably precise jumps and 230K gallons of boiling borscht avoided,my sphinter is currently lodged just under my throat.The music is real great. 10\/10 will clench again. The graphical style is neat and original, reminiscent of some DOS games (I know it's going for NES style, but it kind of falls short in that avenue). The concept is not bad, it's obviously a parody\/homage of Ninja Gaiden and there's nothing wrong with that. And it's tough being a developer, and you can't please everyone. I didn't like this game, but I always feel bad leaving bad reviews on indie games. Anyway, here are some facts and opinions:\u25ac PROS \u25ac- Decent DOS-y \/ NES-y graphics- Cool blood physics effects and stuff- Get double jump from the beginning (I love jumpin)- Wall climbing is always fun- Lots of checkpoints- No lives (they know the game is hard)- Collectibles are mostly well placed\u25ac CONS \u25ac- Rigid jumping physics make for annoying platforming- Unoriginal and Difficult to read enemy design- Wind- Walls are too clingy (often accidentally grab onto walls and get killed)- High contrast graphics hard on eyes after a while- Bosses are uninspired and not very fun- Wind- Spikes on pretty much every surface- No powerups (at least as far in as I played. If the game doesn't have anything but jumping within the first 20 minutes it's too dry for me)- No real original mechanics or well-adapted borrowed mechanics- Wall jumping is wonky and often leads to death- Poor enemy AI- etc etc etcI'm not sure what advice I'd give to the developers to improve the game without changing the vision of the game. I'm not sure if this is how the game is intended to be. These are some things I'd be interested in:- More enemies, but you have a weak projectile (shuriken)- Maybe some enemies have projectiles but you can deflect them?- Some kind of ground\/air dash for mobility and attacking- Less stiff jumping (gradually slow as you reach jump apex, then slowly but exponentially increase fall speed. You know, how gravity works)- Make dying constantly not a huge element of the game (personal preference - repetition is not always fun)- Maybe an ability system like the lantern items from Ninja Gaiden- Maybe couch co-op mode with even more enemies?- Get rid of the wind (sorry, I've hated wind mechanics in platformers since Lost Levels)If you're reading this, Dev, keep making games! Don't ever get discouraged!. I loved the original Xbox Indie Mute Crimson, but I held off on picking this remake up since, well, I figured I already bought and played it. Took my little blocky caterpillar ninja through his high contrast world, gathered all of the coins, and liked it enough to publish a poorly written review for my Xbox Indie site. I didn't see much reason to return.I was wrong. The big improvement here are certainly the graphics. The old shoebox now looks like an actual ninja guy. The scant enemies and levels look much better and animate smoothly. We now can enjoy some impressive cinematic art between levels as well, and everything just pops. For a game with a mostly two color palette, it looks really good. Kinda like a 2-D MadWorld. Well, maybe not, but it oozes style.Platforming is tight and a joy to play. If you're like me, then you're a fast approaching middle-aged white guy, but then you'd also find the level design strict and at times maddening but always fair. You'd also hate the rising lava levels which Mute Crimson+ employs on occasion, stressing out our fat middle-aged hearts to dangerous limits. Welcomed modern conveniences of infinite lives and checkpoints will help keep your sanity intact, though they're far from a crutch. An optional goal of finding hidden coins in a level provide further challenge, and it can be tough to secure it and make it out alive.There's still a bit of clunkiness present what with the inexplicable arrow zones which alter the control of the ninja, but these spots add some much needed variety to the game and help flesh out a journey otherwise dominated by jumping and slashing. I'm so glad there are people out there who remember that platformers can exist between the extremes of masochist memorization and cakewalk adventure fetch-quests. Mute Crimson+ feels so refreshing by comparison, even after playing the XBLIG original. It's not going to blow anyone away, but it's an immensely satisfying game all the same.. This game took me 5 hours to complete.The reason I am giving this game a negative review is that the later stages become so difficult and unforgiving that the game stop being fun and turns into a tedious chore.+++Positives++++I loved the art. The animations are crisp. The cutscenes are funny and cute. The stages all have unique looks.+The game length feels right+Consistent difficulty ramp up+New gameplay mechanics are introduced constantly+You will feel a huge wave of relief if you beat it---Negatives----Starts feeling extremely tedious (waiting on laser cycles, trial and error gameplay)-Movement is slightly sluggish (slight acceleration when you start moving, static jump height)-Wall climb mechanic takes some getting use to, and you will need to be a wall climb master to beat the game-This game is almost entirely platforming, you will go long stretches without attacking-Checkpoints are infrequent on the last stagesThe game isn't bad, and if you are looking for an extreme retro challenge then this game might be perfect for you.Don't try to beat it in one sitting.. where to even begins with this one...oh i know,if you're a big fan of platformer, this game is definetly something you want to play.for the details on the game:the gameplay is rather simple,only two button: jumpin and attacking. some people may see it as a bad thing,but the game utilize to the extensive places those simple mechanic in their level design and difficulty,speaking of which.the game isn't too easy,but it isn't really difficult or punishing either (at the beginning at least),the game's difficulty slowly raise up as you progress to levels,it may sounds banale and a given for all games. but mute crimson + is so smooth about his difficulty level it almost comes out as flawless.some people may found the game way too hard (depending on your level of experiences with this genre),but the game is build around how much persevering the player is willing to be with the game. (you can say it's the middle way between dificult platformer like "super meat boy" and your casual run down the mill platformer)of course,the gameplay and difficulty isn't the only thing to write home about.the level look all different and blend flawlessly with the level design, making the locations rather distinc. the color pallet is also a great addition to the level design giving information to the player by the color used in those level.and the soundtrack is amazing,if anything the OST can be a selling point of it's own,it is that good. and a good motivation to go through more difficult level too (that's another persevering factor)overall:this is a great little gems most platformer fans would definetly enjoy (even tho let's be fair,i probably made this review way too long and perhaps dragged on certain point for way too long for it to be enjoyable and readable by anyone,didn't i?)
